2011/2012 A new scholastic year

The best way to start a scholastic year is by drawing a challenging still life. Students always think it's too hard until they get going.Start off by sketching the composition, comparing the dimensions of the objects, looking for symmetrical objects, looking at overlapping perspective and observing negative spaces. When all the objects are placed comfortably on an A4 paper with a couple of inches to spare, you know you are on the right track.Do the same thing on an A3 paper and build up your drawing, constructing symmetrical objects and ellipses. Keep an eye open for negative spaces. Start shading, comparing tones, looking for different tones in each object. Create different textures using different pencils, putty rubber, sharp erasers and paper stumps. All outlines must disappear into tones and remember, shadows are of the utmost importance!
